Automatic Gate & Access Control Technician Jobs

Automatic gate techs are the people called when a property manager's front gate traps a delivery truck or a card reader dies at rush hour. The trade sits between the door and fence worlds: enough low-voltage wiring to scare off fence crews and enough mechanical work to scare off alarm techs. One day you are programming operator boards on a swing gate, the next you are cutting a new hinge plate with a torch. Shops servicing gated communities, parking facilities, and industrial yards cannot find enough techs who can do both halves of the job.

Frequently Asked Questions: Automatic Gates & Access Control

What does an automatic gate technician actually do?

You run service calls on gate operators, entry systems, and the hardware that moves them. Most calls are operators that will not cycle, control boards fried by lightning, and loop detectors or photo eyes out of adjustment.

What do gate techs make an hour?

Techs with solid low-voltage skills start around twenty-five. Once you can program operator boards and run your own route without a supervisor checking everything, shops pay thirty to thirty-eight.

Do I need electrical experience for gate work?

Low-voltage wiring is the core of this trade. You do not need a journeyman card at every shop, but you do need to be confident with a multimeter and comfortable reading wiring diagrams.
